Design Philosophy
Following our experiences with our previous sites we wanted to create something more ambitious that better reflected our interests in IT.
Cascading Style Sheets was a technology we were very interested in so we decided that the whole site would be under the control of style sheets and all layout would be done using stylesheets. We felt very strongly that tables and frames were not to be used for layout.
Nigel had some experience of Dreamweaver from his time at the Institute of Cancer Research so we decided that Dreamweaver templates would be the other component we needed to maintain a consistent look across the whole site.
We have had problems with Dreamweaver, such as the application locking up and the design view not displaying Style Sheet layouts properly, and if we were to start again we would probably be looking for a free html editor.
Raw versions of the photo index pages and the sitemap were generated with Linux shell scripts.
The photos were resized using Fookes Easy Thumbnails. In future we may be supplementing this with the Gimp.
On the subject of photos...if you would like to deeplink to our site, tell us then we can let you know if the image gets moved during a revamp.
