The Arrival of Georgie

We arrived at the New Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where Jan's C-Section was scheduled for 7.30 a.m.

It had been a busy night on the Labour Ward and there weren't any beds free so we had quite a wait. Luckily we were too excited to mind and there was a fair bit of pre-med (taking of antacid, preparation for drip etc) so the time probably passed more quickly for us than it did for our families waiting for news.

We were taken into theatre just after 12.30 and Jan was put in a hospital gown while Nigel wore rather fetching blue scrubs. Once the drip and various monitors were attached the spinal block was administered. This was pretty unpleasant but takes effect very quickly and Jan was soon numb to chest level.

Screens are put in place so you can't see what is going on unless you particularly want to (although you can look upwards and catch sight of the proceedings in the reflection of the light fittings!). Nigel stayed by Jan's side while the surgical team got to work. Jan felt a lot of tugging and pulling but nothing uncomfortable and gas and air was at hand. This only went on for 5 or 10 minutes when Nigel was offered the opportunity to take a peek round the screen to see a baby's head emerging.

Very quickly afterwards, our newly born daughter was in our arms. She was taken for checks but returned to us very quickly and we cuddled her while the stitches were being put in.

We were then taken to the recovery room where we left to get to know our new baby who had her first feed.

After about an hour we were taken to the ward and telephoned our families with the wonderful news that we had a new baby daughter.
