How to make an origami flapping bird

Start with a square of paper

Fold paper in half from bottom to top

Lay left edge over top edge

Turn piece of paper over, right to left

Lay left edge over top edge

TRICKY BIT - Place thumbs inside centre pocket and move thumbs outwards so that the top and bottom points start to meet

With 'open' part at bottom and holding all but the top layer in one hand, take top layer with your other hand and pull up as far as it will go without tearing. At this point you will need to tease the left and right sides towards the middle line with your thumb while continuing to gently tug the top.

When you have completed this step, the left and right sides will now lie on top of the central line and your paper will resemble a kite.

Turn piece of paper over, right to left

Repeat tricky fold

Ensuring what resembles two legs are at the bottom, fold top right section over to the left

Turn piece of paper over, right to left

fold top right section over to the left

Fold bottom 'wing' up and turn piece of paper over right to left

Fold bottom 'wing' up

Pull bird's head slightly to the left and flatten in place

Pull bird's tail slightly to the right and flatten in place

Make a fold in top of bird's head to create beak

Curl the wings around a pencil

Hold on to front of bird and pull tail to flap
