Stuff we like

We are lucky to have some great places almost on our doorstep. Our most favourite place has to be Sam Burns - the junkyard with the slogan "From a needle to an anchor".

We often visit Burns Yard on the way to Prestongrange Museum (April - October).

Lots to browsePrestongrange

The Aroma Bistro (128 High Street, Prestonpans) has delicious mezze and moussaka as well as 'traditional' paninis and all day breakfasts. It's very reasonable and the staff are really friendly.  For takeaway food, our favourite is undoubtedly Natural Spice (1D Hawthorn Rd, Prestonpans, 01875 819988) for its excellent vegetable dhansak, chana masala, tarka dhal and vegetable curry.

The Small World shop (9a Orchard Crescent) is the place to buy gifts in Prestonpans. It has a fantastic selection of jewellery, confectionery, stationery and household goods - all of which are fairly traded. It's opening hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10-12 and 2-4 and Saturday 10-12 and the volunteers can order out-of-stock items from the Traidcraft catalogue.

Prestonpans has an award-winning Library on West Loan, which is very child-friendly, has lots of community information, and serves great coffee.  It's opening hours are Monday & Friday 10-7; Tuesday & Friday 10-5.30; Saturday 10-1.  The library is closed each day from 1-2 and all day Wednesday.

The Three Harbours Arts Festival began in 2006 as a way of exhibiting art in unusual places. Artists from all over the world have taken part in the event which is spread across Prestonpans, Cockenzie and Port Seton.

Prestonpans is a rail town on the North Berwick to Edinburgh branch line. With FirstScotrail, kids go free so we often go to to Edinburgh (or North Berwick). One of our favourite haunts in Edinburgh is the Forest Cafe which is often host to some interesting events and exhibitions. In nearby Potterow, our favourite Sunday dining spot is the Mosque Kitchen an under cover, outdoor area attached to the Central Mosque in Potterow.

A trip to Leith must include a visit to Out of the Blue which has a regular arts market. On the second Saturday of each month, the former Drill Hall in Dalmeny street offers 'Bruncheon featuring The Sound of Muesli'.

When we go further afield we use our Friends and Family Railcard and have found Youth Hostels a fantastic way to stay in the heart of a city.

At home we watch Coronation Street and rent films from Lovefilm.  We really enjoyed The Sopranos and Curb Your Enthusiasm.  Not much beats kicking back when the kids are asleep and listening to Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour.

We like stuff, from Anoraks to Zines and everything in between, including these people:
